Dance is an incredibly important part of our culture, and as humans, we are hardwired to want to dance. In Victoria, dance is the most popular elective activity for girls,1 and every week over 150,000 Victorian girls and boys take lessons in their local dance studios.2
Learning dance is an incredible way for children to find a sense of self and connect with how their bodies move, and what they need to do to fuel that movement.
Not only does dance training provide technique development and physical benefits, it provides positive mental health benefits. Dance helps improve mood as well as reducing stress and anxiety – even one dance class can reduce depression and the positive effects can be felt for up to a week after a dance class.3
Dance also provides children skills for life in leadership, creativity and teamwork.
